Saturday 4th February: "A Horizontal Tasting" - a very understated title from Christopher & Elizabeth for the tasting held at their home in Worthing. The evening was more accurately entitled "Memories of '66 - a 'Heinz Varieties' 1966 Horizontal Tasting of 57 Year-old Wines".
1. Champagne Jacquart, Reims; 1966 World Cup Champions limited edition magnum; Brut Mosaique NV
(Bottle 1018 of a limited bottling of 1966). The only wine of the evening that was not actually bottled in 1966. Lyndsay claimed the empty bottle...!
2. Chateau Palmer 1966 Troisieme Cru; Margaux
3. Chateau Cheval-Blanc 1966 Grand Cru Classe "A"; Saint Emilion (unreadable label!)
4. Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1966 Premier Cru; Pauillac
This bottle was notable for its artwork on the label. Apparently (we think) the wine makers commissioned a different artist every year since 1945. The artist who designed this label, known as the Ram Drinker, was Pierre Alechinsky. If you look carefully you can see it is a ram drinking a glass of wine.
5. Chateau La Tour 1966 Premier Cru; Pauillac (the favourite Bordeaux of the evening)
6. Chateau Montrose 1966 Deuxieme Cru; Saint-Estephe
7. Chateau Haut-Batailley 1966 Cinquieme Cru; Pauillac
8. Chateau D'Yquem 1966 Superior Premier Cru; Sauternes (another unreadable label)
9. Graham's Vintage Port 1966
